The fact that only a minority of the population is interested in politics, that is to say in how society as a whole can be organized, in how a certain harmony of living together on this earth could be achieved, is nothing more than the consequence of the diversion of politics towards this falsification of the meaning that the very concept of politics represents. With the name politics, a tiny minority seizes this essential manifestation of the common, of what belongs to us all, of what determines the way in which we are going to be able to live and organize ourselves, to make it their own particular thing. This abduction of the common thing is deceptively given the name of representation, which in fact can be nothing other than confiscation. It is through this confiscation that the accursed caste of politicians is born, which is ultimately nothing more than the emanation of domination, of what separates us from the mastery of our own lives and makes us strangers to the very notion of our own freedom, to what could give it meaning. It is hardly surprising, then, that this caste is always associated with the powers of money, acts as its intermediary through the political economy and imposes its disembodied logic on us.
The corruption of the politician is not, fundamentally, an effect of his particular personality but quite simply of what his function can only lead him to. The politician takes his place in an organizational structure of society which is that of globalized capitalism. It is this structure which will determine the essence of his actions and which will decide his future in this caste. The politician, whatever his initial intentions and whatever party he may belong to, quickly understands that this is a requirement, beyond which he will not have the slightest chance of making a career, and he adapts to it, that’s all.
In this context, it is not a question of democracy but rather of capitalocracy.
This reality is now so embedded in the managerial norms of this form of society that, apart from a few naive people who won’t last long, only the worst careerists and the most servile seek positions in this political field. And the further up the hierarchical ladder one climbs while crawling, the more notorious the villainy and baseness of spirit.
Ultimately, the experienced politician is nothing more than a neurotic and a sick person, otherwise he would not be able to accept his daily falseness and the excessive accumulation of lies.
This sinister farce could not continue without the permanent backing of the media, which provides constant support for this complete reversal of the very notion of democracy, for its transformation into a plutocracy ruled by psychopaths. And this is very convenient, since the vast majority of these media are now owned or controlled by this same capitalocracy. To give this parody spectacle any credibility, it necessarily requires a horde of interested commentators whose main task will be to partition off the space for political reflection as tightly as possible, to prevent any alternative being considered that could put an end to this debilitating comedy.
Putting an end to the pitiful existence of parties and their divisive nuisances, conceiving the establishment of practical forms of direct democracy banishing this deplorable “representative” system, this is what will never be seriously considered and will even be the object of all denigration on occasion.
The unfortunate voter must know nothing of democracy other than the poor role to which the representative, politicking system has reduced him and in which he must continue to believe against all logic and despite his perpetual disappointments.
Under these conditions, one might still be surprised at the very continuity of the political system in its terrible and increasingly obvious inconsistency if one did not recall what demands this continuity; if one did not recall the obvious fact that capitalism has never been compatible with an effective democracy and never will be. But many are now well aware of this and all that remains is for them to reclaim the political sphere with a completely different agenda.
